But what exists and cannot be counted and it is felt inside, demands a word to be named.
The word, in this case, would be immensity. It is like a word wet with mystery. He was a historical figure which led a rebellion against the injustices made against his people in the Yucatan peninsula. To be honest, I had never heard of this book before, and I bought it maybe two years ago while I was visiting a bookstore.
I was drawn to the story and decided to give it a chance. Sure, it has been quite some time and I am not exactly proud to see that I have not read much Mexican literature this year but well, I can say I have finally started.
Canek is a very short book and the story is told in brief paragraphs. Therefore, I am astounded at the conciseness of the author and his talent as he is able to bring to life with very few words, not only the life of a man, but his feelings, his social and economic context, his sufferings and his wisdom.
There were parts that moved me deeply —from the time when Guy, a child who befriends Canek, seems to be hurt so his little puppy does not feel alone, to longing from a dead mother, to the loss of our indigenous people.
This is a wonderful book that is able to be historical and literary fiction, a call against social injustices, and the biography of a courageous man, all in once and with an exquisite style.
